From 49ers.com:

Gore scored the game’s only touchdown from 14 yards out after cornerback Tarell Brown picked off Cutler when his intended receiver, Devin Hester, slipped out of his route.

“He ran a double move, stutter comeback and I just tried to jump the route and he slipped coming out of his break,” Brown said of his first interception of the season and third of his career. “I was just trying to make a play and do the best that I could for the team.”

Brown’s interception followed one on the Bears previous drive, when defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin got his first-career interception by picking off Cutler in front of the end zone.

Ex-Longhorns cornerback Tarell Brown earns fresh start with 49ers

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Tarell Brown always knew he could do what he did last week. All he needed was a chance.

Brown made his second career start, taking over at left cornerback in place of Nate Clements. In 76 plays against the Indianapolis Colts, the ex-Texas Longhorns standout had only five minus plays. He gave up no big plays and no touchdowns. Pierre Garcon, whom Brown shadowed, had only four catches for 53 yards.

Not a bad start.

“Getting the opportunity was a blessing,” Brown said in a telephone interview. “The coaches had faith in me to go out there and felt like I could be an every-down corner. I think I proved that last week.”

Ready for playing time

From SFGate.com:

Ready for playing time: Tarell Brown confirmed that he will start at left cornerback in “all alignments” Sunday in Indianapolis at the expense of Clements, the incumbent. Clements probably will shift inside to a slot position when the 49ers are in their nickel defense, which figures to be most of the time against Peyton Manning and the league’s No. 1-ranked passing offense.

Brown injured his toe in training camp and that slowed his progress toward competing for the right-cornerback job, which went to Shawntae Spencer. It’s just a coincidence that a few days after signing a three-year contract extension, Brown is preparing for only the second start of his three-year career.

“What a coincidence, huh?” Brown said. “I’m healthy now. Everything feels good. This is my profession. I take pride in what I do. I take it seriously. I’m definitely excited.”

Remarks to the media from Coach Singletary after the Niners-Colts game:

On whether CB Tarell Brown has been pushing for a larger role in the nickel defense:

“I think for Tarell Brown, it’s just something all the way from training camp, just trying to get him back in the mix and trying to get him on the field more to play more. It was just a shame, kind of like [WR] Brandon Jones when Brandon got hurt. They were both doing a great job making strides and had a setback. I think Tarell Brown has worked himself in a situation to try and get more playing time. So, it’s just something that we have to monitor as coaches and really try and put him in the best position to win.”
